This is Mrs Sats Marker. We don’t like her very much!! (Boo Hiss!!)
Mrs SATs marker is very strict about writing. For a long time she has marked writing papers, and hates giving out Level 5s for writing. But, after years of studying her work, we think we’ve cracked her – we know what she’s looking for!
Let’s show her what we’re made of!
Writing Level 5 sentences
What have you got to do to beat Mrs SATs Marker?
- Show you can use a range of punctuation.
- Show off with the WOW words you use.
- Start sentences in different ways.
- Use a combination of short snappy sentences and long, detailed ones.
Take a simple sentence…
The girl ran into the house.
This can become…
Add an adjective to describe the character
• The frightened girl ran into the house.
Improve the verb / add an adverb.
• The frightened girl tore frantically into the house.
Add an adjective to give detail to the setting.
• The frightened girl tore frantically into the unfamiliar house.
Add an opening clause to give extra detail to the character. As well as improving the adjectives you’ve used. Try to use a simile or metaphor for description.
• Her heart pounding like a train, the terrified girl tore frantically into the unfamiliar house.
Add an ending clause to give even more detail.
• Her heart pounding like a train, the terrified girl tore frantically into the unfamiliar house, screaming as loudly as her quivering voice would allow her.
oh thank you Mrs Sat's Marker
